Torii
Vincent Stahl, 2002.
Motive #03-1
The Menges sculpture, in a specific scaling, reminds the viewer of Japanese archways, or Toriis. The image is a fusion of three scales of space: the near area with the Torii, the roads in the mid-range, and the river landscape in the distance. The roads merge with the distant background, and, due to this, seem extremely large. The roads are based on the same Menges form as the archway, but due to a completely different scaling, or deformation, have lost every obvious resemblance to it.
